AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Florida men's and women's swimming teams returned to the pool on Saturday afternoon for a tri-meet with Auburn University and Arizona State University. The meet was held in Auburn, Ala. at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center. The women finished in second place with 127 and the men scored 125 points to finish in second. Auburn won the meet on both the men and women's side.
The women were led by freshman Janelle Atkinson (Jamaica/The Bolles School) who continued her winning ways by winning the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:48.94 to qualify provisionally for the NCAA Meet. Atkinson added a to her victory total by winning the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 51.76 seconds. In the 200-yard butterfly the Gators took the top six spots with junior Natalie Nickson (Orlando/Dr. Phillips H.S.) taking the top time of 2:05.29. Sophomore Laura Cross (Pompano Beach/Cardinal Gibbons) and freshman Jamie Ellis (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) finished one-two in the 500-yard freestyle. Cross finished in a time of 4:54.99 to win and Ellis followed close behind with a time of 4:56.78.
On the men's side, senior Ricardo Monasterio (Caracas, Venezuela/Institutos Edu. Asociados/IRCC) won the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 9:17.28 minutes and teammate senior Greg Reeves (Tallahassee/Leon H.S.) followed close behind in second with a time of 9:30.30. Monasterio brought home a second victory in the 500-yard freestyle finishing in a time of 4:33.15 to gain an automatic bid into the NCAA meet. Joining Monasterio on the winners stand was Reeves with a win in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:50.57 and freshman Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil/Annapolis) touched the wall in 20.26 seconds to win the 50-yard freestyle. The 200-yard breastroke proved to be another strong event for the Gators as they took the top three spots. Sophomore Phillip Norris (Longwood/Lake Brantley H.S.) touched the wall in 2:04.53 to win the event and gain an automatic bid into the NCAA Meet. Also having a strong showing for the Gators was freshman Chris Kellam (Mt. Juliet, Tenn./ Montgomery Bell Academy) who had a winning time of 1:51.10 in the 200-yard backstroke to qualify automatically for the NCAA meet. senior Bryan Kim (Songpa, South Korea/ Yanjae) finished second in the 200-yard butterfly with his time of 1:52.27.
The women will return to the pool on Jan. 13 when they host their first meet of the year. They will compete against the University of Texas at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium. The men will be off until they travel to Southern Methodist University on Jan. 18 and take part in the Dallas Morning News Classic on Jan 19-20 in Dallas, Texas.
