UF Senior Plays for Singles & Doubles Nat'l Titles
Saturday, October 13, 2001 | Women's Tennis
University of Florida senior Jessica Lehnhoff (Delray Beach, FL) continued her phenomenal run at the Women’s Riviera All-American Tennis Championships Saturday afternoon, defeating Fresno State’s Kim Niggemeyer 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinal. Lehnhoff will play Old Dominion’s Nataly Cahana for the title on Sunday at the Riviera Tennis Club. Cahana defeated Duke’s Kelly McCain 6-4, 6-3 to advance.
In doubles Lehnhoff paired with Gator sophomore Lindsay Dawaf (Olney, MD) and defeated Stanford’s Lauren Kalvaria and Gabriela Lastra 8- 6 in the semifinals. The Florida duo meets Oklahoma State’s Linda Faltynova and Katarzyna Kolodynska in Sunday’s final played after the singles match.
“Jessica has been playing extremely well all tournament, but today she did an excellent job of closing the door on the match,” UF assistant coach Dave Balogh said. “She didn’t let her opponent get into the match at all.”
“The doubles match really could have been won by either team,” Balogh continued. “We did a great job of coming up with big shots on big points. There where maybe two or three shots that were the difference in the match, that’s how close it was.”
Only two players have ever swept the All-American titles since doubles were added in 1988: Stanford’s Sandra Birch (1990) and San Diego’s Zuzana Lesenarova (1999).
The Riviera All-American Championships are the first of three national collegiate tennis championships this 2001-02 season. The All-American, the Nov. 8-11 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and the year-end NCAA Championships are college tennis' three national championship events (for singles and doubles) during the season for Division I men and women.
This is the first time Lehnhoff, who is a three-time ITA All-American, has advanced past the quarterfinals of a national singles tournament. She reached the quarterfinals of the 2000 NCAA Championships. Last season, Lehnhoff captured the NCAA doubles title last season with now-graduated Whitney Laiho. That was the first collegiate grand slam title for Lehnhoff.
The last time the Gators set athletes to compete in the Riviera All- American was in 1995, when UF senior Jill Craybas captured the singles title. Craybas also was the last Gator to win a grand slam singles title, capturing the 1996 NCAA Championship.
Lehnhoff has yet to lose a set, including Friday’s 6-1, 4-0 victory over No. 1-ranked Bea Bielik from Wake Forest.
