W-Tennis: Gator vs. Gator in ITA Regional Final
Sunday, October 28, 2001 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida's Linsday Dawaf (Olney, MD) and Alexis Gordon (Windsor, CT) will play each other in the final of the Omni Hotels South Regional Women's Tennis Championships after both won a pair of matches today at the Moblie Tennis Center.
Since the Gator teammates will play each other, the decision was made to return to Gainesville and play the final on Wednesday at home instead of on Monday in Mobile, Ala., so the student-athletes would not miss any classes.
"We are very, very excited about our play this weekend," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "We showed that not only is our fitness top-notch, but mentally we played very tough. All four (of the Gators competing) did extremely well."
All four members competing advanced to the quarterfinals of the 64-player singles draw. Junior Julia Scaringe (Marietta, GA) lost her quarterfinal bout to Gordon 6-3, 6-2, while UF sophomore Annika Bengtsson (Helsingborg, Sweden) dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision to Georgia's Agata Cioroch.
Dawaf topped Georgia's Tina Hojnik 6-3, 6-1 in her quarterfinal match on Sunday before downing Cioroch 6-3, 6-2 to reach the final. After Gordon topped Scaringe, the Gator freshman defeated South Alabama's Viktoria Stoklasova 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals.
As finalists, Dawaf and Gordon earned bids into the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held November 8-11 at the Brookhaven Country Club located just outside of Dallas in Farmers Branch, Texas. This event is the second of three national collegiate tennis championships during the 2001-02 season (for singles and doubles). The first, the Riviera Women's and ITA Men's All-American Championships, took place two weeks ago, and the third are the year-end NCAA Championships.
Dawaf and Gordon join UF senior Jessica Lehnhoff (Delray Beach, FL) in the national event. Lehnhoff secured a spot in the singles and doubles draws after winning the Riviera All-American singles title and then pairing with Dawaf to capture the doubles crown.
