Two Gators Advance at Omni Hotels Tennis Indoors
Thursday, November 8, 2001 | Women's Tennis
Top-seeded Jessica Lehnhoff (Delray Beach, FL) and Lindsay Dawaf (Olney, MD) from the University of Florida advanced to the second round of the 2001 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships Thursday afternoon at Brookhaven Country Club.
Lehnhoff, a senior who is ranked No. 7 in the ITA collegiate rankings, defeated Harvard’s Courtney Bergman 6-1, 6-0 in her first round match. Dawaf topped Northwestern’s Jessica Rush 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the Round of 16.
“Jessica lost the first game of her match and then rattled off the next 12 to win the match convincingly,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “Lindsay played a bit more defensively than she should have in her first round match, but looked very solid. If she can be a little more aggressive in the next round (against No. 2-ranked Lauren Kalvaria from Stanford), I like her chances.”
UF freshman Alexis Gordon (Windsor, CT) lost her first round battle against No. 7-seeded Kim Niggemeyer from Fresno State 6-2, 6-3.
“Alexis seemed a bit overmatched in her first set today,” Thornqvist said. “She settled down in the second set and played more relaxed. The only area she is lacking is confidence. This is a national tournament with all the best players in the country competing and this is a great experience for her.”
All three Gators will be in action on the singles court Friday morning, as Lehnhoff takes on Arizona State’s Adria Engel and Dawaf faces No. 6-seeded Lauren Kalvaria from Stanford. Gordon’s first round consolation draw opponent had not been determined at the time of this release.
