Men's Tennis Beats Seminoles, 4-3
Saturday, February 10, 2001 | Men's Tennis
"They are vastly improved from last year and their No. 1 and 2 guys played tonight for the first time this year," Duvenhage said. "Olivier's match was a good one for him to win. It was a see-saw kind of match with lots of momentum changes. He'd break serve and then (FSU's Xavier Luscan) would break right back. The quality of tennis was very high and Oliver played extremely well to win it. His opponent got a bit tired at the end and Olivier did a good job of closing it out."
Florida opened the match by winning the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The Gators have won the doubles point in every match so far this year.
The Seminoles won each No. 4-6 singles matches in straight sets to take a 3-1 lead and pull to within one match of a team victory. The Gators rallied though. Senior Nathan Overholser (Okemos, Mich.) posted a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over Gustav Bucht and freshman Jeremy Wurtzman (Rochester, NY) countered with a 6-4, 6-4 win of his own at No. 3 over Alex Herrera, evening the overall score for the Gators at 3-3. Those scores left Levant and Luscan on the courts with the overall outcome in their hands. But the Gator junior would come out on top 7-6, 6-4.
Florida will return to action on February 15 when the Gators travel to Seattle for the prestigious National Team Indoor Championships.
