The No. 29 Florida men's tennis dropped all nine matches in a 7-0 loss to No. 11 Texas on Wednesday afternoon at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville. UF falls to 6-8 on the year with the loss while the Longhorns improve to 8-2.
Playing again without ailing top gun Nathan Overholser (Okemos, Mich.), the Gators played with a shuffled lineup. The doubles pairing of Jeremy Wurtzman (Rochester, N.Y.) and Trey Johnson (Gainesville, Fla.) became the 15th different doubles team used by UF in its 14 dual matches this year but fell today by a 8-5 score at No. 3. Will Clinton and Jean Simon clinched the doubles point for UT at No. 2 with an 8-5 win of their own. At No. 1 Jose Zahri and Jorge Haro of Texas saved three match points in a tiebreaker to defeat Olivier Levant (Paris, France) and Troy Hahn (Indianapolis, Ind.), 9-8 (7).
Singles play was very competitive as all six matches were fairly close and evenly played but the Longhorns eventually prevailed in all six. Haro made some runs to post a 6-4, 6-3 win over Hahn at No. 3 and Clinton broke serve up 6-5 in the second set to avoid a tiebreaker and defeat Ross Greenstein (Minnetonka, Minn.), 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6. Ron Kloppert would clinch the match for UT with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4 and Texas would take the remaining three matches. One of them was the most exciting match of the evening, featuring two top 50 players, as #38 Simon of Texas defeated 43-ranked Wurtzman, 7-6 (8), 3-6, 6-4 in a match that lasted 2:19.
The Gators return to action on Friday when they host No. 35 South Florida at 2 pm.
