Men's Tennis CLipped by No. 35 South Florida, 4-3
Friday, March 16, 2001 | Men's Tennis
In a contest that came down to the final match to decide, the No. 29 Florida men's tennis team narrowly lost to No. 35 South Florida on Friday afternoon at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville. The loss drops UF to 6-9 on the year while USF improves to 11-2.
"In singles some of the guys did a good job and some didn't," UF head coach Ian Duvenhage said. "In college tennis you have to be hitting on all cylinders. You have to have six guys playing as well as they're capable of playing and we're not."
Florida took two of three in doubles to earn the doubles point. UF's No. 1 team of Olivier Levant and Jeremy Wurtzman posted a fairly comfortable 8-5 win over Eden Kleiman and Paco Antelo at No. 1. The point was clinched for the Gators by Troy Hahn and Trey Johnson at No. 3 with a 9-7 win. Tied at 7-7, UF broke serve and then Johnson held his to capture the match. The final match saw the Bulls post a 9-8 (5) win over Matt Behrmann and Ross Greenstein.
USF won the first three matches off the courts to take a 3-1 edge. Max Dockhorn ran past Behrmann 6-1, 6-2 for the Bulls' first win. USF's wins a No. 3 and No. 1 ended just a minute apart. Troy Hahn battled from a 5-0 second-set deficit to draw to within a game before falling to Nadim Naser, 6-4, 6-4. Moments later, Antelo finished off a win at No. 1 over Wurtzman, 6-3, 6-2.
Levant drew the Gators back to within one point with a rousing 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 2 over Boris Babic. After breaking serve in two of the final three games of the first set to claim a 6-3 win, Levant found an opportune time to post the only service break of the second set for either player. Leading 6-5 he broke Babic's serve to seal the victory, converting on his second match point with an unreturnable passing shot. Freshman West Nott evened the score with his 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Jit Shah. Nott ran off a streak of nine straight games won en route to his come-from-behind three set victory.
Greenstein and Jorge Escallon split their first two sets. Greenstein trailed 5-2 in the opening set but won the next five games to take it 7-5. Escallon rolled to 6-3 second set win. With the third set even at 2-2. Escallon held serve and started to roll, eventually taking the set and the match for USF with a 6-2 final, winning match point with a cross-court shot over Greenstein's head and into the corner.
The Gators return to action on Wednesday when they host Georgia State at 3:00 pm.
