Men's Tennis Snaps Skid, Beats Georgia State, 6-1
Thursday, March 22, 2001 | Men's Tennis
Sophomore Troy Hahn (Indianapolis, Ind.) won the clinching match as the No. 27 Florida men's tennis team snapped a four-match losing skid with a 6-1 win over Georgia State on Wednesday afternoon at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex on the UF campus. The Gators improve to 7-9 with the win while the Panthers fall to 11-10. Perhaps most importantly, the match marked UF's first win this year when playing without injured senior Nathan Overholser (Okemos, Mich.).
"The young guys are really starting to learn how to play," UF head coach Ian Duvenhage said. "On the road it's different and we'll have to step it up against UK (on Sunday) but I think our team meeting on Monday really helped hash things out. We identified our problems and we're dealing with them. We still have a long way to go but I see progress with this match tonight and that's positive."
UF took two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Georgia State posted a 8-5 win at No. 1 in just 40 minutes time but UF countered with a 8-3 win at No. 3 by Hahn and freshman Trey Johnson (Gainesville, Fla.) that evened the doubles score. Sophomore Matt Behrmann (Indianapolis, Ind.) and freshman Ross Greenstein (Minnetonka, Minn.) would seal UF's doubles point win with a 8-4 win at No. 2. The trio failed to covert on a triple break point up 7-3 but bounced back to take the match 8-4 with Greenstein holding serve.
The Gators won the first three singles matches to finish to secure overall victory. Freshman West Nott (Midland, Mich.) was the first to finish his match. Nott lost the first game but won each of the next 11 en route to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6. Freshman Jeremy Wurtzman (Rochester, N.Y.) needed five match points but he finished off Pablo Perez-Gras, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 to put UF up 3-0. Hahn sealed the Gator win with his extremely quick 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 over Carl Lumsden, a three-set match that took just 1:26 to play. Tied 1-1 in the third set, Hahn had his service broken but he would win each of the next five games, capping of the match when Lumsden's return went long on Hahn's first match point.
Georgia State got its lone win at No. 5 where Fernando Damus beat Greenstein, 7-5, 6-1. Damus up 6-5, Damus found an opportune time to record the match's first service break, taking the first set 7-5 and then cruising in the second. Play wrapped up with another pair of Gator wins. Junior Olivier Levant (Paris, France) won at No. 2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 and play concluded when Behrmann won a lengthy match 7-6 (2), 6-4 at No. 4. That two-set match took 1:52, 26 minutes longer than Hahn's three-set match.
The Gators return to action on Sunday when they travel to face No. 38 Kentucky at 1:00 pm.
