Men's Tennis Beats UK, 4-3
Monday, March 26, 2001 | Men's Tennis
The match was forced inside due to cold weather in Lexington and then delayed for a couple hours as the teams waited for the UK-LSU women's match from 11:00 am to conclude. In the interest of time, the teams played singles before doubles but when the teams split the three singles matches and a overall winner could not be declared, doubles play was necessitated.
"It was a long delay and I'm really proud of how my guys handled it," UF head coach Ian Duvenhage said. "Ross (Greenstein) came back from down a set and won and that was critical for our win. Doubles was excellent today. That was the best doubles we've played since National Team indoors (in mid-February). I'm really happy with this win."
Florida picked up its three singles wins at number two, three and six from Olivier Levant, Troy Hahn and Ross Greenstein. Levant cruised in his win over Matthew Emery, 6-1, 6-0 while Hahn and Greenstein each needed a third set. It is a landmark victory for Greenstein as the win marked the UF freshman's first dual match singles win after being hampered for much of the spring by a foot injury. In the lone matchup of ranked players, 49th ranked Edo Bawono of UK took down 47th ranked Jeremy Wurtzman, 6-2, 6-4.
UF clinched the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Matt Behrmann and Greenstein were first off with a 8-3 win at No. 2 over Johan Grunditz and Karim Benmansour. Levant and Wurtzman clinched the match with their 8-5 win at No. 1 over Bawono and Reven Stephens. The No. 3 match between Hahn and Trey Johnson of UF and Matthew Emery and Johan Pousette of UK was suspended at 6-6 once the Gators clinched the doubles point.
The Gators return to action on Tuesday, March 27 when they host Brown at 3:00 pm.
