M. Tennis Beats Brown 6-1 For Third Straight Win
Wednesday, March 28, 2001 | Men's Tennis
Junior Olivier Levant (Paris, France) won the clinching match as the No. 27 Florida men's tennis team cruised in a quick, 6-1 win over Brown on Tuesday afternoon at UF's Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. The win, UF's third in a row, evens the Gators at 9-9 on the year while the Bears slip to 6-5.
"I thought we did a good job today," UF head coach Ian Duvenhage said. "I'm hoping that we keep improving. I can see progress in a number of areas but we still have a long way to go."
UF took two of the three doubles matches to earn the opening point. After the Gators and Bears took one 8-3 win each at No. 2 (UF) and No. 3 (Brown), things came down to No. 1. Tied 2-2, Levant and freshman Jeremy Wurtzman (Rochester, N.Y.) broke serve and began to roll, ending up with a 8-5 win over Chris Wolfe and Chris Drake.
Brown evened the team score at 1-1 when UF freshman Ross Greenstein (Minnetonka, Minn.) was forced to retire with a foot injury at No. 5 singles trailing 6-1, 1-0. Freshman West Nott (Midland, Mich.) gave UF a 2-1 edge with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6. Nott needed just 55 minutes and two match points to post his seventh dual match win of the year. Sophomore Matt Behrmann (Indianapolis, Ind.) rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 to put UF up 3-1 and Levant clinched the victory with his one hour and 13 minute 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2, converting on his second match point on which Wolfe's return hit the net.
The match concluded as sophomore Troy Hahn (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Wurtzman's matches ended seconds apart, both as UF victories. After trading games, Hahn broke serve at 5-5 in the second set and held on for a 6-2, 7-5 victory. Wurtzman took a tight first set by breaking serve at 4-4 and winning the first set after a serve-and-volley winner at the net. He then won the first five games on the second set en route to a 6-4, 6-2 victory that took one hour and 18 minutes.
The Gators return to action on Friday, March 30 when they host No. 26 at 4:00 pm. Starting with the LSU match, every regular-season match for UF for the remainder of the season is with an SEC opponent.
