The third-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team remained undefeated in Southeastern Conference action after Friday's 6-1 victory over Ole Miss at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. The Gators improved to 17-1 overall and 9-0 in the SEC, while the Lady Rebels fell to 8-11, 2-8 in league action.
"We didn't play very smart tennis today, but we were able to close out the matches and get the win," UF head coach Andy Brandi said. "We lowered our level of play but look forward to playing again on Sunday."
The Gators continue their season-ending road swing on Sunday, when the team travels to Mississippi State. Florida has just one regular season match remaining after Sunday's battle against the Bulldogs, facing sixth- ranked Vanderbilt in Starkville, Miss., on Wednesday prior to the start of the SEC Tournament.
Florida opened the match against Ole Miss winning the doubles point for the 17th time this season, as the Gators swept all three positions.
In singles action, only Stephanie Hazlett was unable to produce a victory, as the Gator senior lost to Mira Radu 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot. However the rest of Hazlett's teammates were able to secure the dual match win.
At positions Nos. 5 and 6, Florida posted impressive straight-set victories as Julia Scaringe and Annika Bengtsson won their respective matches. Freshman Lindsay Dawaf continued her impressive rookie season posting a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Alesya Ignatieva at the No. 3 position. At No. 2, Jessica Lehnhoff was forced into a first-set tiebreaker, Lehnhoff won the tiebreaker 7-2 and went on to win the second set 6-1. At the No. 1 position, Whitney Laiho had her hands full with Julie DeRoo. The Gator senior dropped the opening set 7-5, but capture the second 6-4. With the dual match already won, the two agreed to play a supertiebreaker, where Laiho claimed the first three points on her way to a 10-5 win.
