Sunday, April 22, 2001 | Women's Golf
Georgia rallied from a four-stroke deficit on the final day to capture the 2001 Southeastern Conference Women's Golf Championship title Sunday at the University of Florida Golf Course. The Bulldogs shot a final round 292 to finish the Tournament with an eight-over-par 872.
LSU, which shot opening rounds of 287 and 289, had a final round of 301 to place second with a score of 877, and Auburn and South Carolina tied for third with a score of 887. Host team Florida finished fifth with a score of 891.
"They played very consistent today," said Georgia head coach Todd McCorkle, the one-time assistant coach of the UF men's team. "They worked hard and fought hard. The good news is we got contributions from every player."
USC's Kristy McPherson shot a final round 70 and finished with a SEC Tournament record 207 to take medalist honors. "It feels awesome. I had no clue what the record was or that I was even close to it," she said. "It feels awesome to be able to accomplish that."
Fifth-place finisher UF shot a 298 on the final day. Freshman Amanda Dick (Clearwater/Countryside H.S.) led the Lady Gators after shooting her second even-par round on Sunday for a tournament total of 219. Dick finished the tournament tied for eighth.
"I hit the ball really well off the tee which put me in good position, " Dick said. " I hit some good birdie shots. I think we all came together really well as a team. We have really good team chemistry."
Sophomore Brittany Straza (Ft. Meyers/Leighigh) shot a 76 on Sunday for a combined score of 220 tying her for 10th in the tournament. Straza was named Honorable Mention All-SEC. Sophomore Jeanne Cho (Boulogne, France/St. Stephen's Episcopal) shot her third 75 of the tournament. Cho shot 225 for the tournament placing her 19th.
Sophomore Sam Zausner White (Rockville, Md./The Bullis School) shot a three-over 75 for the final day bringing her tournament total to 227. Redshirt freshman Joy Stephenson (Ft. Meyers/Ft. Meyers) fired an 80 Sunday for a final score of 246.
"They played well today, said UF head coach Jill Briles-Hinton. "I was proud of the way they came back. They showed a lot of grit, guts and heart. The girls learned something from this and that's important."
Florida will now wait until Monday, April 30th for the announcement of the NCAA Regional fields.
