Men's Cross Country Wins Florida Intercollegiate

The University of Florida's men's cross country team won the Florida Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships today at Miccosukee Greenway Park in Tallahassee, Fla. The Gators finished with 25 points. The Florida women took third in the women's 6K race with 59 points. Colleges and universities from across the Sunshine State competed in the event hosted by Florida State.
The Gator men ran an impressive race, with four harriers finishing in the top 10 overall, and only a 51 second spread between the first finisher and the fifth. Chris Duncan was Florida's top individual, in second place overall with a personal-best 8K time of 24:33.71. Rolando Oriz, Steve Zieminski and Courtney Chambers also finished in the top ten and recorded new career-best times. Moise Joseph and Cory Presnick finished in the top 20 in the race of 178 men and bested their previous top times.
"We had a good day," said head men's coach Doug Brown. "I was pleased with all the personal records and the top five spread. We just need to keep working like this."
The Florida women had two runners finish in the top ten. Senior Erin Merten finished first for the Gators in third place overall with a time of 21:29.02. Her time was a new career-best in a 6K race and also a new Florida record for that distance. Freshman Carling Cookerly continued an impressive rookie season with her second top ten finish in as many meets with a seventh place finishing time of 22:03.69. Her time pput her fourth on Florida's top-ten list for a 6K race. Walk-on freshman Mallory Dunn, in her first official appearance as a Gator, took 19th with a time of 22:43.95.
The Florida men will travel to the Greensboro Invitational in Greensboro, N.C. next weekend. The women will have the week off.
