The University of Florida men's swimming and diving team announced today that freshman Gabriel Mangabeira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) has joined the Gator program.
Mangabeira attended the Colegio Princesa Isabel in Brazil and swam for Clube Vasco da Gama under Coach Ricardo Lugao. While on the club team, Mangabeira was a three-time Brazilian Champion.
Mangabeira is the Brazilian National Champion in the butterfly and was part of the first-place 200-meter medley relay team at the 1999 Pan American Games. Mangabeira's personal best times include 54.42 in the 100-meter butterfly, 57.45 in the 100-meter backstroke and 2:05.91 in the 200-meter individual medley at the 2001 Brazilian Nationals and 1:52.40 in the 200-meter freestyle at the 2000 Brazilian Trials.
"Gabriel is going to have a big impact on our men's team because he's so versatile," said Head Coach Gregg Troy. "He swims everything; he's an outstanding butterfly swimmer, a very, very good backstroker, he swims the individual medley, he swims all the freestyle events. From that standpoint he makes us a completely different team. He fills some weak spots we had in the fall. He is also a key player in three or four relays."
Mangabeira joins the Gators, who finished their fall competition with a 6-2 record, the best start for a men's team under Troy.
