University of Florida junior golfer Camilo Villegas kept up the strong play from the fall season, as the Medellin, Colombia native finished in fifth-place at the World Amateur Golf Team Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Villegas shot a two-under par 286 this past weekend at the Saujana Golf & Country Club, as Colombia finish eighth in the team standings at 580 (+4).
Villegas, who is currently ranked 21st in the latest Golfweek/Titleist Collegiate Individual rankings, finished ahead of Clemson's D.J. Trahan, who is the No. 1 ranked player in the Golfweek/Titleist Amateur Rankings. Trahan finished in 10th at 291 (+3).
Villegas' performance added to an already strong list of accomplishments in amateur action in the 2002 season. In late July, Villegas shared co-medalist honors in the stroke-play portion of the 100th Annual Western Amateur. Villegas, the 2002 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, followed up the performance two weeks later by advancing to the final 16 in the match-play portion of the 102nd Annual U.S. Amateur Championship.
During the fall portion of the 2002-03 Gator golf schedule, Villegas has posted one first-place finish (Inverness Invitational) and three top-20 finishes. Villegas has finished in the top 20 in 14 of his last 16 college tournaments.
Florida will be back in action on Nov. 8, as the Gators compete in the Hooters Match-Play Championships at Barefoot Resort in Myrtle Beach, SC. The Gators are the seventh-seeded team in the 16 team event, as they will take on No. 10 seed Washington in the first round of the tournament. The first two rounds will take place on Nov. 8, with the semifinals and finals to be played on Nov. 9-10.
