Field Event Athletes leave Mark at FSU Relays

The University of Florida women's throwers completed the sweep of field events this weekend at the Florida State Relays, as Candice Scott won the hammer throw, Rachel Longfors won the discus and Dore DeBartolo took first in the shot put. In men's action, Ryan McIntyre won the discus, while Paul Condron won the pole vault garnet, and Brian DaCunha won the pole vault gold competition.
Saturday, McIntyre won the discus with a mark of 54.16m/177-8, while newcomer Casey Jeffery finished seventh with a throw of 47.36m/155-4. In the pole vault garnet competition, Condron took first place, clearing 5.20m/17-00.75, with DaCunha finishing second with a clearance of 5.10m/16-8.75. Dan Shaffer also competed in the garnet competition, finishing fifth after clearing 4.47m/14-8. In the pole vault gold competition, both DaCunha and Condron cleared 5.20m/17-00.75 to tie for first place.
Friday, Rachel Longfors won the discus with a throw of 54.64m/179-3, which is fourth in school history and a personal best by five feet. DeBartolo came in third in the event with a mark of 49.45m/162-3. DeBartolo claimed the title in the shot put with a throw of 15.09m.49-6.25.
In the women's pole vault gold competition Friday, Chandra Lacombe finished second (3.66m/12-00), while Jennifer LaPorte finished fourth, clearing 3.51m/11-6.25. Dara Altman placed eighth (3.51m/11-6.25) and Dana Van Wagner finished ninth (3.36m/11-00.25) to round out the Gators' action.
On Thursday, sophomore Candice Scott won the hammer throw with her mark of 220-4, re-setting her own school record. Her throw was the second-best collegiate throw in NCAA history.
Scott, who was the 2002 NCAA Indoor weight throw champion, bettered her school-record mark by nearly 13 feet. Her throw also sets a new Southeastern Conference record by seven feet. Teammate Erin Gilreath, who is the reigning NCAA Indoor weight throw champion, finished second with a personal-best mark of 196-8, which moves her into third place in school history. DeBartolo finished fourth in the event with her throw of 181-11, which is the sixth-best mark in school history.
