Cross Country Men Second, Women Fourth at Stampede
Saturday, September 20, 2003 | Cross Country
The men tallied 46 points, just 11 points behind the Bulldogs. The Gators were led by senior Steve Zieminski who finished second with a time of 25:46.07. Freshman Steven Hassen and junior Cory Presnick also finished in the top five for Florida in fifth and sixth place with times of 26:05.07 and 26:06.78, respectively. Junior Brent Schneider and freshman Ryder Leary placed 14th and 21st to round out the scoring for Florida.
"We had a lot of good performances on the men's team," head coach Jeff Pigg said. "I was pleased with hoe individuals performed, especially Zieminski, Hassen, Presnick and Schneider."The women finished with 85 points in fourth place behind Vanderbilt, Georgia and South Florida. Junior Carling Cookerly was the only Gator woman to finish in the top ten, finishing ninth with a time of 18:47.90. Junior Kay Lennon, freshman Elly Kabboord, senior Jennifer Riley and junior Mallory Dunn were Florida's scorers.
"On the women's side we had a solid meet," Pigg said. "It is good that Carling (Cookerly) and Kay (Lennon) are consistent for us and that we had a freshman in Elly Kabboord come in and step it up. We beat South Florida two weeks ago at home. They went back and worked hard and beat us this time. We're not happy with our finish as a team, but that should make us work harder. Each time out with have to continue to raise the bar."This was a tough course for both teams, but it was good to get a preview of the SEC Championship Course."
