Wednesday, November 3, 2004 | Men's Basketball
Senior forward David Lee lead the way for Florida men's basketball with 21 points and seven rebounds, helping the Gator team to a 105-65 win over the Florida Southern Moccasins in the first game of the season. The Gators shot 51.4 percent in the game while holding Florida Southern to 37.1 percent from the court.
UF led by 30 points with under 10 minutes left in the second half. With just three minutes left of play, Florida reached their 100-point mark, leading the game 101-59.
"Tonight, we really took care of the ball," said men's head coach Billy Donovan. "This is a game we can really build on. But we've got a good base to build on and have some depth. Hopefully we'll have another week under our belt and we can come back here next week and make some more strides."
The game began with a tip-off grab from Lee. The St. Louis, Mo., native then dished the ball out to the three where junior Anthony Roberson was waiting. Roberson nailed the trey for the first points for UF and went on in the game to net 14 total points for UF and four assists.
Other key scorers for the men's team were junior Matt Walsh and sophomore Mohamed Abukar who tied tonight for 15 points each. Walsh also nailed three three-pointers and led UF in assists, adding six to the 24 helps tallied by the team in 40 minutes. Knocking down the boards, Walsh collected six total rebounds, four of those being from Florida Southern's missed baskets. Abukar hit 7-of-8 shots from the charity line and ended the night with four rebounds and two blocks, a high for the Gator squad.
Shopping on the court and notching a team high of six steals, true freshman Taureen Green had his first taste of the collegiate game. Green went 5-of-6 from the free throw line, poured in 13 total points, nailed two treys and assisted five baskets.
Florida basketball will return to the O'Connell Center as the team faces Eckerd on Nov. 9, at 7 p.m., on Gator Territory. The game will be the last of the preseason for the team and on Nov. 19, the 2004-05 season will be underway when the Gators take on Jacksonville at the Jacksonville Memorial Arena.
