The University of Florida women's tennis team ended the regular season with a perfect 19-0 overall record after Sunday afternoon's 7-0 victory over South Carolina at Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center. The win also locked up the overall Southeastern Conference title for the Gators, who ended the league slate with a 11-0 record and will enter next week's SEC Tournament as the No. 1 seed. Florida has captured 20 SEC titles in the 25-year history of league play.
The season run marked the 16th time UF has ended the regular season with a perfect record in SEC play. The overall regular season streak was the seventh undefeated run entering the SEC Tournament in program history, most recently accomplished in 1998 when UF eventually went on to win its third of four NCAA titles.
"We did a great job today and I'm very pleased with how we're playing," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "I'm extremely proud of the way we've battled all season long and come through in tight situations."
Sunday's win extended Florida's overall win streak to 36 matches, now the third best win streak in program history.
The second-ranked Gators have posted an impressive 24-5 singles record in matches where a game score is tied at 5-all.
"The way we've handled ourselves under pressure has been the key all season for us," Thornqvist said.
Florida opened Sunday's match winning the all-important doubles point for the 19th time this season. UF's No. 2 doubles team of Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes continued their impressive run, posting their 19th consecutive victory which is the fourth longest streak in UF history.
Extending individual singles streaks included senior Lindsay Dawaf, who posted her 18th consecutive victory and remained undefeated in singles matches this season, and junior Zerene Reyes, who tallied her 16th straight victory.
