Friday, December 30, 2005 | Men's Basketball
In its home match-up Friday afternoon against Florida A&M, the Florida men's basketball team extended its best start in school history with an 84-47 victory over the Rattlers to move to 12-0 on the season. With the win Billy Donovan's Gators also set a school record for wins before New Year's Day, as Joakim Noah (New York, N.Y.) led the team in scoring with 18 points.
Noah, the reigning Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, also chipped in five rebounds, two steals, one block and one assist in just 16 minutes on the court. Junior Chris Richard (Lakeland, Fla.) finished the contest with 13 points and nine boards, as well as one apiece in the assist and steal columns. Senior forward Adrian Moss (Houston, Texas) bested his season-high scoring total by two points with 12 against the Rattlers on 5-of-6 shooting from the field.
Junior guard Lee Humphrey (Maryville, Tenn.) also scored in doubles digits for the Orange and Blue with 12 points on 4-for-4 shooting from behind the arc, while sophomore Corey Brewer (Portland, Tenn.) dished a game-high 11 assists, and also chipped in eight points, six rebounds, one block and one steal to the win. Sophomore Al Horford (Puerto Plata, D.R.) and freshman David Huertas (Humacao, Puerto Rico) notched six points apiece, while Horford also added four boards, two steals and one block.
Sophomore guard Taurean Green (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) ended his school record-setting free-throws made streak at 37, after he missed the front end of a pair from the charity stripe at the 1:20 mark of the first half. Green's streak dated back to Florida's face-off against Florida State on Nov. 25, and broke the previous school record of 33 which was set by Kenyan Weaks in 2000.
The Rattler defense kept Florida within reach for part of the first half, as the score near the 10-minute mark showed the Gators with a 17-11 advantage. A 19-4 offensive attack during the last five minutes of the first, however, led to a 49-23 Gator lead at the break.
FAMU came out of the locker room and notched the first pair of points in the second, but were held scoreless by the Gator defense until the 13:53 mark when UF had run away with the game and held a 72-26 advantage.
The Gators extended their all-time series record to 7-0 against the Rattlers, who were led in the contest by Tony Tate with 21 points to lead all scorers. Florida finished the contest with 32-for-61 shooting from the field, to finish at 52.5 percent. UF also capitalized on 22 A&M turnovers, scoring 30 points as a result.
Florida hits the court for its next game Jan. 3, in a 6 p.m. contest against Morgan State, looking to extend its home win streak to 15 games at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
