Friday, February 18, 2005 | Men's Swimming & Diving
The No. 3 University of Florida swimming teams continued the 2005 Southeastern Conference Swimming Championships on Thursday evening in grand style as the Gators collected four wins in record fashion at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium.
Opening the evening up in front of a near-capacity crowd was Georgia's Sebastian Rouault as he touched the wall in the men's 500-yard freestyle and established a new SEC and O'Connell Center record time of 4:15.00. Taking the silver was Rouault's teammate Robert Margalis, as he posted a time of 4:17.60. Earning his first SEC medal and finishing in third-place was UF freshman Tobias Work (Falmouth, Mass.) as he notched a time of 4:18.97. Gators Scott Kaufmann (Sparks, Nev.) and Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) place sixth and seventh respectively in times of 4:22.62 and 4:25.79.
Improving on her own newly established 500-yard freestyle SEC record from the morning preliminaries was Florida's Caroline Burckle (Louisville, Ky.), as she bested her own mark by more than two seconds to win the gold medal in a clocking of 4:38.32.
"I just wanted to swim the best that I could," Burckle said. "I knew it would be a tough race, so I just went for it."
Finishing second was Auburn's Adrienne Binder in a time of 4:40.86, while Burckle's teammate Leah Retrum (Columbus, Ind.) posted a time of 4:42.97 to take third.
Continuing his historic SEC Swimming Championships run was Gator junior Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.). Lochte not only took first-place in the men's 200-yard individual medley, but did so in American, U.S. Open, NCAA, SEC and pool record fashion by notching a time of 1:41.76.
"It's amazing," Lochte said. "I hope my swim pushes everyone to go even faster."
Auburn's Eric Shanteau placed second in the event in a time of 1:44.84, while his teammate Kurt Cady placed third in a clocking of 1:46.44. UF junior Brian Hartley placed fourth in a time of 1:46.57.
Auburn's Kirsty Coventry claimed the women's 200-yard individual medley in a new SEC and pool record time of 1:55.34, while teammate Emily Kukors claimed the silver in a time of 1:58.21. Mary DeScenza of Georgia took third in a time of 1:58.60. Gators Katie McCann (Walpole, Mass.) and Vipa Bernhardt (Bad Hersfeld, Germany) recorded times of 1:59.60 and 1:59.84 to place fifth and sixth.
In the men's 50-yard freestyle, Auburn senior Fred Bousquet took first-place in a time of 19.57 seconds, while Tim Patrick of Kentucky earned the silver in a time of 19.68 seconds. George Bovell of Auburn finished in third-place with a time of 19.72 seconds. Florida freshman Daniel Penniman placed sixth in a time of 20.06 seconds.
"I didn't swim good at all," Bousquet said. "I missed my start, and I was very late off the block. Usually my turn is the best part of my race, but I barely touched the wall with my feet. I'm really mad because I know I could've been faster, but I'm still happy that I won the race."
Claiming the top-two places for Georgia in the women's 50-yard freestyle was the duo of Kara Lynn Joyce and Amanda Weir, who posted times of 21.91 and 22.49 seconds respectively. Joyce's time set a new SEC and O'Connell Center record. Placing third for Auburn Kara Denby with 22.63. UF senior Maureen Farrell (Northridge, Calif.) placed eighth in a clocking of 22.87 seconds.
Claiming their third relay title of SEC's was the Florida 400-yard medley relay team of Lochte, Corey Welch (Larksville, Pa.) Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil) and Darian Townsend (Montrose, South Africa) who established a new SEC and O'Connell Center record of 3:07.87. Auburn's quartet of Doug Van Wie, Sean Osborne, Bousquet, and Ryan Wochomurka placed second in a time of 3:09.66, while Kentucky's relay of Alejandro Bravo, Kristian Outinen, Daniel Cruz and Daniel Farnham notched a time of 3:12.22 to take third.
"At the second-to-last turn, I looked over at Auburn and I saw that we were still ahead," Mangabeira said. "I just closed my eyes and started swinging my arms."
In perhaps the most exciting race of the night, the Florida women's 400-yard medley relay team of Farrell, Bernhardt, Candace Weiman (Castro Valley, Calif.) and Burckle edged the Georgia quartet of Samantha Arsenault, Lindsey Ertter, DeScenza and Weir by seven hundredths of a second to take first-place in a pool record time of 3:35.22. The Georgia team touched the wall in a time of 3:35.29, while Auburn's team of Coventry, Denby, Margaret Hoelzer and Kukors in a time 3:35.93.
The SEC Swimming Championships continue tomorrow at the O'Connell Center Natatorium through Sat. Feb. 19.
