The No. 3 University of Florida swimming teams turned in some clutch performances on Friday night in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium during the 2005 Southeastern Conference Swimming Championships, to set up a final day of competition that could require the final event of the meet to determine who will be crowned as the SEC's top teams.
Entering the final day of competition, the Auburn men hold a slim 581.5 to 559.5 lead over the host Gators. Georgia's women's squad leads Auburn 551 to 532, while the UF women are a close third with 479 points.
Junior Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) opened the evening in record setting fashion as he captured his second individual title of the meet, winning the 400-yard individual medley in a new SEC record time of 3:39.08. Finishing second was Auburn's Eric Shanteau in a clocking of 3:43.97, while Georgia's Robert Margalis took third in a time of 3:45.05. The quartet of Brian Hartley (Indianapolis, Ind.), Tobias Work (Falmouth, Mass.), Jan Wolfgarten (Frankfurt, Germany) and Scott Kaufmann (Sparks, Nev.) posted times of 3:46.12, 3:49.36, 3:52.26, 3:56.33 to place fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth respectively.
Auburn senior Kirsty Coventry added another SEC title to her resume as she collected the 400-yard individual medley title in a pool record time of 4:06.28. UF sophomore Leah Retrum (Columbus, Ind.) claimed the silver for the Gators in a time of 4:08.95, while teammate Joanna Maranhao (Recife-PE, Brazil) finished third in a time of 4:09.92. The UF duo of Katie McCann (Walpole, Mass.) and Ashley Carusone (Gainesville, Fla.) placed fifth and sixth in times of 4:13.18 and 4:14.81 respectively.
Florida senior Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil) earned his first individual SEC title of the meet as he captured the 100-yard butterfly in a pool record time of 46.77 seconds. Georgia's Jonathan Schmidt touched the wall in a time of 46.89, while Fred Bousquet of Auburn placed third in a clocking of 47.07.
"It's awesome, this is the first time I have won the event in four years," Mangabeira said. "I always tried and this was my last chance. I took a shot and got it."
In the women's 100-yard butterfly, Georgia's Mary DeScenza took first-place in a pool record time of 52.12, while Gator Candace Weiman (Castro Valley, Calif.) placed second, touching the wall in a time of 52.97. Finishing third was Tawnie Bethune of Auburn as she clocked in at 53.41.
Florida Olympic gold medalist Darian Townsend (Montrose, South Africa) teamed up with Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) to earn the top-two places in the 200-yard freestyle in times of 1:34.41 and 1:34.76. George Bovell of Auburn placed third in a time of 1:35.07, while UF senior Kris Wiebeck (Tampa, Fla.) placed eighth in a time of 1:37.32.
"I'm so excited," Townsend said. "I saw Ryan Lochte and Caroline Burckle winning races and breaking records, so for me to finally get a win under my belt is awesome."
Continuing her strong performance at SEC's Florida freshman Caroline Burckle (Louisville, Ky.) won the women's 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:44.64, while Georgia's Kara Lynn Joyce took second in a time of 1:45.16. Auburn freshman Emily Kukors placed third in a time of 1:45.76, while UF junior Mary Uhle (Sankt Ingbert, Germany) placed seventh in a time 1:48.04.
"I just tried to go out there and do the best that I could," Burckle said. "Every time you dive in, you have to give it your all, and whatever happens, happens."
Alabama earned its first individual crown of the meet as Vladislav Polyakov took first-place in the 100-yard breaststroke in a pool record time of 53.58. Georgia senior Scott Gardner placed second in a time of 54.44, while Florida sophomore Bill Mrazek (Tallahassee, Fla.) touched the wall in third-place with a time of 54.77. The UF duo of Luca De Matteis (Naples, Italy) and Corey Welch (Larksville, Pa.) turned in times of 54.90 and 55.17 to place fourth and tie for sixth respectively.
"It feels very special," Polyakov said. "From the beginning of the year, winning the SEC Championship was one of my ultimate goals. To finally get here feels very good."
Gator junior Vipa Bernhardt (Bad Hersfeld, Germany) won the women's 100-yard breaststroke by notching a time of 1:00.11 out-touching Georgia's Sarah Poewe, who finished in second with a time of 1:00.77. Lindsey Ertter of Georgia placed third in a time of 1:01.07.
"It's my best time by a lot, it felt great," Bernhardt said. "I'm just so proud that I made it."
Auburn's Doug Van Wie placed first in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 46.71, while teammate Chad Barlow took second in a time of 46.82. UF's Mangabeira claimed the bronze with a time of 48.16, while Wiebeck finished eighth with a time of 49.72.
Margaret Hoelzer of Auburn narrowly won the women's 100-yard backstroke as she notched a time of 53.71, to take the win over Florida's Maureen Farrell (Northridge, Calif.) by only seven hundredths of a second. Tennessee's Jacque Fessel placed third in a clocking of 53.98.
"I was tired from the 200 free, so I'm happy with it," Hoelzer said. "As a senior, it is a great way to go out."
In the men's 200-yard freestyle relay the team from Auburn consisting of George Bovell, Ryan Wochomurka, Bryan Lundquist and Bousquet, the Tigers took first-place in a pool record time of 1:16.95. Kentucky's team of Tim Patrick, Clay Gasparovich, Daniel Farnham and Steven Manley placed second in time of 1:18.25, while the Gator quartet of Nick Borreca (Honolulu, Hawaii), Sioui, Townsend and Daniel Penniman (Pensacola, Fla.) clocked in at 1:18.30 to place third.
Establishing a new SEC and pool record time of 1:28.87, the Georgia relay team of Joyce, Paige Kearns, Andrea Georoff, Amanda Weir placed first. Auburn's team of Kara Denby, Coventry, Leslie Lunsmann and Jana Kolukanova placed second in a time of 1:29.43, while the Gator quartet of Natalie Pike, Burckle, Weiman, and Uhle took third in a time of 1:31.25.
The SEC Swimming Championships conclude tomorrow at the O'Connell Center Natatorium.
