Tashia Morehead Selected in WNBA Draft Third Round
Saturday, April 16, 2005 | Women's Basketball
The University of Florida's Tashia Morehead was selected in the third round of the 2005 WNBA Draft, as the Washington Mystics made the Panama City native the 32nd overall pick.
Morehead, a 5-foot-11 forward, became the 14th different Gator to be selected in the WNBA Draft, which began in 1997. At least one Gator has been drafted in eight of the nine years of the WNBA's existence.
"I still can't believe it," Morehead said of being drafted. "It's been a dream to play professional basketball and now I'm one step closer to that becoming a reality. I'm numb and it hasn't even sunk in that I was drafted. It didn't care which team picked me, I'm just so happy."
Morehead made an immediate impact during the 2003-04 season, her first with the Gators. In two years wearing the Orange & Blue, Morehead averaged 10.7 points and 4.9 rebounds while starting 47 of the 58 games she played. Her 71 career three-pointers is the ninth most in UF history. She completed her Gator career with the fifth-highest three-point percentage (33.3%, 71-213) in UF history. Morehead is an excellent scorer who single-handedly outscored her opponent 46-42 in the 2003 Junior College national championship game, earning MVP honors of the event after leading Gulf Coast to the 81-42 win.
