GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Junior transfer Kiyomi McMiller and the rest of her newly-minted Gators teammates begin summer workouts on Thursday, June 18, but before she arrived in Gainesville, the 5-8 guard spent time in the Central American nation of Nicaragua giving back to the community.
In conjunction with her non-profit organization "The Product of Hope," McMiller hosted a series of three basketball camps in Bluefields, Kukra Hills and Pearl Lagoon, Nicaragua. The camps ran from June 11-16, and were attended by more than 300 children, some of whom traveled from up to 90 minutes away to meet and learn from the 2026 All-American.
McMiller played for the Nicaraguan senior national team in the 2025 FIBA COCABA Women's Championship where she averaged 28.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists.
"The camp meant a lot to me," McMiller explained, "because I was able to give back to the community, and I just want the kids in Nicaragua to know that you can enjoy basketball and also work hard too and that aspect of working hard can also translate to life.
The camps were also conducted in honor of Veronica "Barbie" Johnson, a beloved and inspirational leader in the Bluefields community who passed away recently.
"I am so proud of Kiyomi and the non-profit work she is doing in Nicaragua," said Florida Head Coach Tammi Reiss. "Service and giving back to the community is part of our Women's Basketball culture here at Florida. Ki is touching so many young men and woman through the game of basketball. She is really embracing mentorship, leadership and being a positive role model. There is nothing more rewarding than impacting lives and showing young people what dreams can be attained through hard work."
"The Product of Hope" mission is to provide underserved youth boys and girls in third world countries along with the U.S., with basic necessities while using basketball as the vessel to promote these fundamentals. The Product of Hope foundation wants to provide basketball skills and training as well as opportunities through basketball to better their situation and life.
