Almón advances to quarterfinals of FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2027 Centrobasket Qualifiers

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida forward Aurura Almón scored six points and grabbed 12 rebounds Wednesday night as the Dominican Republic upended Nicaragua 90-54 at the FIBA Women's AmeriCup Centrobasket Qualifiers. Standing across the court from Almón was Gators teammate Kiyomi McMiller, who poured in 24 points and snagged eight boards for Nicaragua in the loss.
Almón and her Dominican Republic squad advanced to the quarterfinals with the win, and they square off against El Salvador this evening at 10 p.m. EDT. McMiller and Nicaragua have been eliminated, but will still compete in the classification round for fifth through eighth place.
The Qualifiers run from July 12-18, and feature the top eight teams from Central America and the Caribbean vying for a place in the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2027. Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic are in Group A as are Mexico and the Bahamas. Group B consists of Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Guyana and the Virgin Islands.

- The first place teams from each group will advance directly to the semifinals
- The last place teams from each group will play for fifth to eighth place
- The second place teams will face the third place teams from the opposite group (2B vs. 3A, and 2A vs. 3B).
- The winners will advance to the semifinals to face the group leaders, while the losers will join the last place teams for positions five through eight
