No. 9 Women's Tennis Rallies to Defeat No. 3 Georgia, 4-3
Saturday, April 2, 2005 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida won its fifth consecutive match, upsetting No. 3 Georgia, 4-3, at the Hopkins Indoor Center. The ninth-ranked Gators (11-2, 5-2 SEC) rallied from a 3-2 deficit to post the thrilling victory and hand the Lady Bulldogs (12-3, 6-1 SEC) their first SEC loss of the year.
"Georgia began the match firing on all cylinders and out-played us in doubles, but we did an unbelievable job of competing in singles," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "There's a point in every season when you have to put up or shut up, and today we came together and showed what we have. It was a gritty performance and I'm so proud of the team."
Florida lost the doubles point for the first time since March 26, 2003, snapping a streak of 36 consecutive regular-season doubles points. But the gritty Gators rallied in singles where juniors Boglarka Berecz and Jennifer Magley claimed wins on their respective courts to give UF a 2-1 lead.
Magley posted her second straight upset over a top-10 opponent with an impressive 6-4, 6-3 victory over fifth-ranked Shadisha Robinson after Berecz topped Jitka Schonfeldova 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 position.
However, Georgia claimed the next two singles matches, as freshmen Alex Liles and Whitney Benik fell on courts No. 3 and 4, setting the stage for senior Zerene Reyes and sophomore Nina Suvak, who each used three-set comebacks to carry UF to the thrilling win.
On court No. 2, Reyes defeated 23rd-ranked Natalie Frazier 6-7, 6-4, 6-0 and Suvak grinded out a 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 win over Caroline Basu at No. 5 to keep the Gators in the hunt for the SEC regular season title.
Florida next travels to Knoxville to face No. 25 Tennessee on Sunday afternoon.
