Caroline Burckle (Louisville, Ky.), reigning SEC Female Freshman Swimmer of the Year, claimed second-place in the A-Final of the 200-meter freestyle at the 2005 Conoco-Phillips National Championships in Irivine, Calif., Friday.
Burckle lost the race in a touch-out by 1/100th of one second to Brittany Reimer of Canada, whose time of 1:59.73 claimed the top spot in the event. Burckle's time of 1:59.74 was good enough not only for second-place, but also a new personal-best, as she broke the two-minute barrier and improved her previous best time by half of a second.
Gator swimmer Natalie Pike (Boca Raton, Fla.) recorded a fifth-place finish in the C-Final of the 200-meter free, improving her personal-best by nearly three seconds as she posted a time of 2:03.11. Rounding out the Gator competitors during day three of the meet, Ashley Carusone (High Springs, Fla.), took four seconds off her previous personal-best in the A-Final of the 400-meter individual medley. Carusone recorded a fifth-place finish in the event with a time of 4:47.28.
Swimming action at the 2005 Conoco-Phillips National Championships continues Saturday with preliminary events in the morning, and finals in the evening.
