Whitney Benik Highlights UF W-Tennis Play on Friday

Whitney Benik marched into the quarterfinals of the National Collegiate Tennis Classic at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Benik's performance, however, was one of the few bright spots during Friday's competition involving the University of Florida women's tennis team.
Benik battled past Stanford's Megan Doheny 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 in the opening round before topping Kentucky's Carolina Escamilla 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 16.
The Gators were shutout out on the first day at the Freeman Memorial Championships held in Las Vegas, as Boglarka Berecz and Nina Suvak lost their respective opening round singles matches in straight sets, while the doubles pair of Alex Liles and Suvak dropped their doubles match.
Also at the NCTC, top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Diana Srebrovic easily defeated Kentucky's Danielle Petrisko 6-2, 6-0 in the first round, but lost a 6-7 (4), 6-1, 7-6 (5) thriller in the next round to Stanford's Whitney Deason, who was ranked No. 25 in the fall listing, ending Srebrovic's run at the tournament.
Senior Alexis Gordon lost the opening match in her return to the collegiate courts, falling to Southern California's 69th-ranked and seventh-seeded Luana Magnani 6-3, 6-4, but regrouped and defeated Texas' Ristine Olson 6-0, 6-1 in the first round of consolation.
Sophomore Lolita Frangulyan lost her first round match to Southern California's Lindsey Nelson, 6-1, 6-4.Nelson did not play enough college matches during the fall season to earn a preseason ranking in January, but entered the fall ranked No. 9 nationally. Frangulyan, who is ranked No. 91 in singles, then lost in the first round of consolation 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to Texas' Courtney Zauft.
