Saturday, January 28, 2006 | Women's Tennis
The second-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team earned its second consecutive shutout victory in defeating Furman 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center.
The Gators (2-0) earned straight set singles victories on all six courts, with Diana Srebrovic, Alexis Gordon, Nina Suvak, Whitney Benik, Lolita Frangulyan and Alex Liles each posting wins. In doubles, the No. 1 pair of Benik and Suvak lost, but Florida collected the doubles point with wins provided by Srebrovic and Frangulyan at No. 2 and by Gordon and Keri Robison at No. 3.
“Furman was a really scrappy team,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “We got down in a few of the second sets in singles and allowed those matches to be a little closer than they should have. But it was good to see that we could put it into another gear when we had to to close out those sets. Overall, I thought we looked better in this match today than we did in our first match of the season, which is always what you want to see.”
Florida has over a week before its next match, playing host on February 8 to instate foe South Florida at the Ring Tennis Complex beginning at 3 p.m.
