Jouven Leads Lady Gators Following Day One of SEC Championships

After the first round of the Southeastern Conference women's golf Championships, redshirt freshman Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) leads the Lady Gators in a tie for 15th at the par 72, 6,217 yard Legends Club of Tennessee. The Florida women combined for an eighth place finish following day one of competition Friday in Nashville, Tenn.
Jouven fired a four-over 76 to claim the highest placement for the Orange and Blue. A pair of Lady Gators followed close behind, as sophomore Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) and freshman Brittany Nelson (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) each notched a 77 on the day to claim a tie for 23rd.
“The SEC is a strong conference,” said UF head coach Jill Briles-Hinton. “We didn't have anyone step up and shoot that low score for us today. If we had, we could have easily turned our 308 into a 304; one person has to shoot low in every round in order for us to compete.”
Freshman Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) carded a 78 to finish at plus-six for the day and in a tie for 33rd place. Sophomore Sandra Gal (Leichlingen, Germany) rounded out the Lady Gator five with a seven-over 79, to claim a tie at 41st.
As a squad UF posted a 308 in the first round. Auburn leads the way in the team standings, after its competitors combined to shoot a plus-12 300 during day one. Caroline Martens and Alexis Rather, both of LSU, lead in the individual medalist hunt, after each fired an even-par 72.
“Tomorrow is moving day for us,” said Briles-Hinton. “In spite of not having a low shooter, we're still only eight strokes out of the lead. All the girls had very mediocre performances today, but they know what they need to do to fix it, and I'm completely confident in their ability to come back. If we can move up tomorrow and get into position, we can win this tournament just as easily as anyone else.”
Action continues at the Legends Club of Tennessee with tee-times started at 8:30 a.m., Saturday morning. All five Lady Gator competitors will start off round two among the first five groups off the tee box.
