Six Gators and Thornqvist Recognized with SEC W-Tennis Honors
Wednesday, April 19, 2006 | Women's Tennis
A total of six members of the University of Florida women's tennis and head coach Roland Thornqvist collected honors Wednesday afternoon when the Southeastern Conference released its 2005-06 awards.
For his second time in five years with the Gators, Thornqvist was selected by his peers as the SEC Coach of the Year, also earning the honor in 2004. Thornqvist guided the Gators to a perfect 11-0 conference record this season en route to capturing the SEC overall title.
In a change from previous years, the All-SEC Teams were compiled by a vote of the league's 12 coaches. Florida's Whitney Benik, Alexis Gordon, Diana Srebrovic and Nina Suvak each were unanimous selections to the 13-member First Team. Alex Liles and Keri Robison were named to the All-SEC Second Team.
The Gators (18-1) enter the SEC Tournament as the No. 1 seed and will play the winner of the match between South Carolina and Ole Miss on Friday at 10 a.m. Florida plays host to the four-day event, which begins with first-round action Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Ring Tennis Complex.
