Saturday, April 8, 2006 | Men's Tennis
The No. 15 University of Florida men's tennis team won its third consecutive match as the Gators defeated Vanderbilt, 6-1, Friday afternoon in Nashville. The match, which was moved indoors due to inclement weather, saw UF improve its record to 12-6 on the season and 6-3 in SEC play. VU fell to 7-11 overall and 2-7 in the league.
Doubles continued to trip up the Gators as UF was defeated on courts two and three. Florida was forced to recover from the early 1-0 deficit for the second straight outing and went on to get the win after losing the point for the fourth time this year.
Florida worked quick to turn things around on the singles courts winning on each of the six courts in straight sets.
UF senior Vladimir Obradovic (No. 65) evened things at 1-1 when he defeated Ryan Preston (No. 42) on the top court (6-2, 6-1). Since moving to the number one position, Obradovic has won four out of five matches.
Sophomore Greg Ouellette (No. 34) put the Gators on top for good with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Evan Dufaux on two. Ouellette has won five straight outings, the last four of which have come in straight sets.
Sophomore Nestor Briceno (No. 48) got Florida one away from clinching the match when he took out Andy Mack on court three (6-1, 6-1). With his win, Briceno improved his SEC dual match record to 8-1 on the year.
Redshirt senior Chris Brandi came away with a 6-4, 6-2 victory on court five over Nik Cromydas to win the match for the Gators. The win pushed Brandi's record to 12-1 at the number five spot in the order.
Seniors Stefan Tell and Ryan Sherry rounded out the scoring as Tell defeated Nathan Sachs, 6-2, 6-3 on court four and Sherry was a 7-5, 7-6 (6) on court six.
Florida will play its final regular season road match of the season as it rounds out the weekend Sunday at No. 21 Kentucky at 1 p.m. in Lexington, KY.
