VB Sends Three To AVCA All-America Teams
Wednesday, December 12, 2007 | Volleyball
University of Florida senior setter Angie McGinnis (Fraser, Mich.) has been named a second-team All-American, while senior outside hitter Marcie Hampton (Gainesville, Fla.) earned third-team accolades and sophomore libero/defensive specialist Elyse Cusack (Melrose, Fla.) garnered honorable mention recognition, the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced on Wednesday.
The trio of UF selections marks the fifth time in the last six years that the Gators have had at least three representatives on AVCA All-America teams, and the seventh-straight season in which they've collected at least two All-America nods.
The Florida volleyball annals now boast 21 players who have combined to earn 46 All-America honors, each coming since head coach Mary Wise took over the reigns in 1991.
Florida's career leader in assists with 5,784, McGinnis captured AVCA All-America honors for the third-consecutive year after establishing a single-season school record for assists per game (13.88), which ranked sixth in the nation, and setting the Gators to a .303 hitting percentage that stood as the country's fifth-best mark. Under McGinnis' direction, UF also set a school record with a 17.49 kills per game average, besting the school record by 0.55. In her final collegiate campaign, McGinnis became the first player in school history to collect both 1,000 digs and 300 blocks in her career, as well as the first setter to reach either of those milestones. She played in 449 games during her career - more than any Gator in the rally scoring era - and owns nearly 40 career, season and match records at UF. She earned her second-straight Southeastern Conference Player of the Year award in 2007, and was named to the AVCA All-South Region team for third year in a row.
McGinnis is just the fourth player in school history to earn three AVCA All-America honors, joining Aury Cruz (2001-03), Benavia Jenkins (2001-03) and Jane Collymore (2003-05). She is also the only setter in school history to be tabbed an All-American by the AVCA in multiple seasons, having been named to the first team in 2006 and the third team in 2005.
Hampton earned the first All-America honor of her career on the heels of her most prolific offensive season, which saw her become the school's career leader in total attacks with 4,204. Despite missing the NCAA Championship with a ruptured Achilles tendon, Hampton registered the ninth-best single-season kills per game average in school history with a mark of 4.49, and finished her collegiate tenure as one of just 12 UF players to average at least 3.00 kills per game over the course of her career. She also finished her career at Florida ranked second in program history in digs (1,384), fifth in kills (1,471) and sixth in points (1,692.5). She was a first-team All-SEC pick this season after garnering second-team accolades in each of the previous two campaigns, and earned a berth on the AVCA All-South Region team. In July, she won a bronze medal while playing with the U.S. Women's National Team at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Hampton's selection keeps in line with Florida's tradition of elite outside hitters, as she is the seventh player at the position to earn All-America honors at UF.
Cusack is the first libero/defensive specialist in school history to capture All-America honors, doing so after posting the second-highest single-season digs total in school history, a career-high 587. On Nov. 18, she became the fastest player in school history to break the 1,000-dig barrier, supplanting Hampton for the honor, as well as just the second player in SEC history to reach that mark as a sophomore. An AVCA All-South Region team member in 2007, Cusack also set school records for assists (123), assists per game (1.13), aces (35), aces per game (0.32), points (42.0) and points per game (0.39) by a sophomore L/DS. She received SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors on both Sept. 24 and Oct. 1, becoming the first player in conference history to earn the award in back-to-back weeks, and owns a league-record five Defensive Player of the Week honors after just two seasons of play. Cusack took her play to another level in the NCAA Championship, averaging 6.60 digs per game, while her 66 digs during the run to the regional semifinal stand as the fourth-highest NCAA Championship total in program history.
Hampton and Cusack are both graduates of Gainesville's P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School, and both played club volleyball for Gainesville Juniors. They are the sixth and seventh Florida natives to earn All-America honors at UF, a group that has combined to bring home the accolade 11 times.
