The University of Florida men's tennis team completed the home portion of its regular season schedule Sunday afternoon as the Gators blanked Kentucky, 7-0, in Gainesville. With the win, UF improved to 11-5 overall and 6-3 in Southeastern Conference play. Kentucky slipped to 13-12 overall and 3-7 in the league.
“Obviously, we played pretty well in doubles but I thought singles was stronger today,” said UF head coach Andy Jackson. “I thought in doubles we had a lot of things to our advantage and to our credit we were able to use those. We had a lot to play for today and we were ready going into the match. Any win for our team this year in the Southeastern Conference is good.”
The doubles point came down to the top court where UF's sixth-ranked Jesse Levine and Greg Ouellette defeated Marcus Sundh and Peter Bjork, 8-3, to give the Gators the 1-0 advantage. With the win, the UF duo improved to 13-2 on the year.
Florida's Nestor Briceno and Geoffrey Barton also collected a doubles victory as they beat Roman Ogarkoy and Shane Collins on court three, 8-0, in 28 minutes.
The Gators carried the momentum on to the singles courts where UF won each of the matches in straight sets.
Jordan Dolberg gave the Gators a 2-0 lead with his 6-0, 6-2 win on court five. Dolberg won nine straight games before dropping one in the second set. Sunday's match was the final regular season home match for Dolberg who is the lone senior on the squad. He was honored in a ceremony prior to the match on center court.
“Today was great and I knew the crowd was really behind me,” said Dolberg. “It was a lot of fun and it was very special. All five years here have been great and I couldn't have asked for a better school to be a part of.”
Levine (No. 3) put UF one away from clinching the match with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over No. 90 Bruno Agostinelli at the top of the order. With the win, Levine remained undefeated on the season as his record stands at 16-0.
Barton clinched the match for the Gators on court six with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Shane Collins. The victory was the second for Barton in a dual match this season.
Ouellette (No. 10) made it 5-0 in favor of the Gators with his 6-3, 6-4 win over Sundh on court two. Ouellette has now won seven straight matches and is 13-3 on the number two court this season.
Briceno and Billy Mulligan gave the Gators the shutout with wins on courts three and four, respectively. Briceno took out Peter Bjork (6-2, 6-3), while Mulligan edged Jorge Jorge, 6-4, 7-6 (6).
Florida travels to No. 53 South Carolina for a match against the Gamecocks on Saturday, April 14 at 1 p.m. Following that match, UF will go to Auburn to complete their match against the Tigers. UF leads, 2-1, in a match that was postponed from April 1 due to rain. The Gators and Tigers will pick up the match where it left off on Sunday, April 15 at 1 p.m.
