Monday, August 13, 2007 | Volleyball
Limited space remains available for the 2007 Florida Volleyball Coaches Clinic, to be held on Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Lemerand Center on UF's campus.
Hosted by Florida head coach Mary Wise, the topic of the camp will be “Preparing Your Team for Match Play,” and will feature instruction from associate head coach Nick Cheronis, assistant coach Ryan Theis and volunteer assistant coach Jenny Theis, as well as demonstrations by the 2007 Gator volleyball team.
Wise, presented in 2006 with the honor of “All-Time Great Coach” by USA Volleyball, has led UF to 16-consecutive Southeastern Conference championships and won 603 matches as a Division I head coach. Entering her 17th season at Florida, she has molded 19 players into All-Americans who have earned a combined 43 honors, and has twice earned National Coach of the Year accolades. In addition to being the fastest female head coach to reach the 500-win mark for her career, Wise is the only woman to lead a team to the NCAA championship match and the lone female to coach in more than one Final Four.
Widely regarded as one of the top volleyball minds in the nation, Cheronis serves as defensive coordinator for a Florida team that finished 10th in the nation in blocks per game in 2006. He possesses a wealth of overseas coaching experience, and has written articles that have appeared in Coaching Volleyball Magazine and the book The Basics of the Game. Ryan Theis, the team's offensive coordinator, saw the Gators post a school-record 16.94 kills per game in 2006, while also finishing third in the nation with a .292 hitting percentage. Jenny Theis is one of the most decorated players in UF history, having been named an AVCA All-American and SEC Player of the Year twice each.
Coaches can reserve a spot at the camp by email at volleyballmail@gators.uaa.ufl.edu or fax at (352) 375-7807, or by registering online at www.gatorzone.com/camps and paying by credit card. The cost of the camp is $50.00.
