W-Tennis Has Great First Day of Play at Freeman Memorial Classic
Saturday, January 12, 2008 | Women's Tennis
In one of the most talented and competitive fields in an individual collegiate non-grand slam event, the University of Florida women's tennis team had a great opening day of play at the sixth annual Freeman Memorial Classic at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Friday.
UF's Csilla Borsanyi capped Friday's competition with an impressive 6-3, 6-4 victory over Georgia Tech's seventh-ranked Kristi Miller in the round of 16 of the Flight 1 draw, marking the highest-ranked opponent the Gator sophomore has defeated during her collegiate career.
Megan Alexander cruised past Southern California's Christy Andrews, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round, before dropping a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 decision to Stanford's Celia Durkin in the round of 16 of Flight 1.
Sophomore Anastasia Revzina opened with a tough 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to USC's Amanda Fink but rallied in the Flight 1 consolation draw for a 7-6, 7-6 victory over UCLA's 28th-ranked Yasmin Schnack, tying the highest-ranked opponent she has defeated.
“Overall, this was a solid day for the Gators,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “Our goals for this tournament were to compete well under pressure and play with toughness. This field is as challenging as an NCAA field, so we weren't as concerned with our performances, but we came through with our results on the court, as well as met our competitive goals. We played well and competed well and this was a great way to start this tournament. We need to build on today's performances and continue to improve throughout this event.”
In Flight 2 singles action, senior Lolita Frangulyan downed Oregon's Stephanie Macfarlane, 6-0, 6-1, to advance.
Frangulyan later paired with Revzina for an 8-6 win over Arizona State's Kelcy McKenna and Pilecka in Flight 1 doubles round of 16 action.
“Lolita has really stepped up her play and I was impressed with her today,” Thornqvist said. “She moved better on the court than I've ever seen her and she played with so much confidence. This was an excellent start for her.”
The individual singles and doubles field consists of some of the nation's top players, with all competitors coming from teams ranked among the top 50: No. 1 Georgia Tech, No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 UCLA, No. 4 Florida, No. 8 USC, No. 12 North Carolina, No. 19 Arizona State, No. 45 Oregon and No. 43 and host UNLV.
Weather permitting, action continues at 10 a.m. PST on Saturday and the finals are scheduled for Sunday, with times to be determined. Admission to all matches is free. The event features two flights each of both singles and doubles along with consolation rounds.
