On Thursday, January 17, Alachua County Juvenile Justice Council will host The Justice for Girls Rallying Cry for Change Community Briefing from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at AvMED Health Plans on NW 89th Blvd. in Gainesville.
University of Florida head volleyball coach Mary Wise will serve as moderator of the briefing, which will feature prominent speakers and experts on treatment of girls in or at risk of involvement in the Florida juvenile justice system.
The Community Briefing will examine the distinct differences between the ways girls and boys enter into the justice system. Based on findings indicating that a different approach is urgently needed, the Community Briefing will result in a Call to Action to address the specific needs of justice-involved girls in the North Central Florida area and around the state.
Featured speakers at the event include Dr. LaWanda Ravoira, expert and author on girls' issues, Donna O'Neal, Chief of Staff for the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, and Roy Miller, President of Children's Campaign, Inc.
Named an All-Time Great Coach by USA Volleyball in 2006 for her efforts on the court, Wise is heavily involved with PACE Alachua, which provides guidance to young girls who experience conflict at home or in school.
