Saturday, October 11, 2008 | Cross Country
The men's cross country team placed second in the 8K race at the Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic on Saturday morning, led by sophomore Anthony Morales (Palm Coast, Fla.). The No. 14 women's team placed 24th out of 44 teams competing in the 5K meet. Many of Florida's runners did not compete in the race as they are preparing for the Pre-NCAA Invitational on Oct. 18.
The men scored 49 points in a field of 38 teams to finish behind Windsor (Ontario). Morales was the top finisher for the Gators, crossing the finish line second overall in 25:02.8, a personal best. Redshirt freshman Michael Anderson (Williston, Fla.) came in fifth, also setting a new personal best of 25:41. He was followed by James Uthmeier (Destin, Fla.) in ninth (25:46.2) and freshman Alex Schanen (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.) in 10th (25:55.3). Both Gators set new personal-best 8K times and recorded their first career top-10 finishes. The final UF runner to score for the Gators was sophomore Alex Wills (Orlando, Fla.), who placed 25th overall in a time of 26:21.4.
Three sophomores led the Gators on the women's side. Laura Garrow (Port Orange, Fla.) started the scoring, placing 15th in 18:21.5. Alison Babb (Gainesville, Fla.) was next, crossing the finish line in 50th place in 19:11.1 in her first meet of the 2008 season. Hailey Neal (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), also competing for the first time this season, placed 140th and finished the 5K in 20:50.5.
The UAB women earned the top spot, followed by Windsor, South Florida, Tampa and Houston. Embry-Riddle, Kennesaw State and Johns Hopkins finished behind the UF men's team.
