The University of Florida's Megan Alexander (Dallas, Texas) and Marrit Boonstra (The Netherlands) captured the ITA South Region Doubles Championship, played Monday at the Dan Magill Tennis Center.
The Gator tandem blanked Georgia Tech's Noelle Hickey and Christy Striplin, 8-0, in the final match to take the title and earn a wildcard berth into the ITA National Indoor Championships, which will be held Nov. 6-9 in Charlottesville, Va.
“We talk all the time about playing our best tennis in a championship round and we couldn't have played any better today on the doubles court,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “We served well, we returned well and we really played solid all-around tennis today.”
Earlier on Monday, Boonstra defeated Auburn's Melissa Koning in the semifinal and squared off against Georgia's top-seeded Chelsey Gullickson in the singles final, but dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision.
“Marrit had a good tournament, she just ran into Chelsey Gullickson, who has been red-hot during the weekend,” Thornqvist said.
As a singles finalist of one of the Regional Championships, Boonstra also earns a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships, considered the second leg of the collegiate Grand Slam.
