W-Tennis: Doubles Team Wins Opening Round at Riviera/ITA All-American
Friday, October 3, 2008 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida women's tennis doubles team of Megan Alexander (Dallas, Texas) and Marrit Boonstra (Netherlands) won its opening-round match in the main draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships played at the Riviera Tennis Club.
The Gator pair, ranked No. 6 in the nation, defeated Notre Dame's 25th-ranked Kali Krisik and Kelcy Tefft, 8-4, to advance to the quarterfinals of the prestigious national event, where Alexander and Boonstra face Duke's third-ranked Melissa Mang and Amanda Granson on Friday.
“We did a really good job today and I was proud of how we played,” UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. “We like to be the more aggressive team, but they took that away from us and forced us to play a different style. We played good, solid defensive tennis and never folded under the pressure. This was a good win. We will have our hands full again tomorrow, though, because that Duke team is exceptional.”
The win marked the 50th career doubles victory for Alexander, whose overall doubles record improved to 50-16.
For Boonstra, Thursday's doubles match was her fifth match in three days, having won a pair of three-plus-hour singles matches in the qualifying portion of the tournament.
