In conjunction with the University of Florida and Shands HealthCare, the Florida volleyball team will host its inaugural “Serving up a Cure” match Friday, Oct. 10 when the Gators take on Kentucky at 7 p.m. in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
The event helps support Cure Kids Cancer, an initiative of Children's Miracle Network. Fans are encouraged to wear orange to the match to help raise awareness of cancer in children. The first 1,000 fans to the match receive free “Serving up a Cure” orange t-shirts courtesy of Gatorade.
Throughout the evening, fans will have the opportunity to pledge money for Cure Kids Cancer through Children's Miracle Network. Those that choose to donate to the cause will have a chance to win an iPod Nano and other Gator prizes.
“There are so many reasons for us to give back to our community, particularly Shands,” Florida head coach Mary Wise said. “It is one of the greatest strengths of our area. If we can raise awareness and any money, then in a small way, we are helping the lives of those battling cancer.”
All Shands employees will receive free admission with their ID badge that can be presented at the Gate 1 turnstile.
The mission of Cure Kids Cancer is to help children's cancer centers fund life-saving treatments and eventually cures for children's cancer by raising funds and awareness. The benefiting hospital of this initiative of Children's Miracle Network is Shands Children's Hospital at the University of Florida.
More than 10,000 children will be diagnosed with some form of cancer this year. Patients are referred to Shands from throughout Florida and the nation. In 2007, 100 children were newly diagnosed at Shands Children's Hospital at UF.
