The University of Florida's Marrit Boonstra (Netherlands) won her opening round singles match at the 2008 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships played at the Boar's Head Sports Club, hosted by the University of Virginia.
The Gator sophomore, who was making her debut in the main draw of a national singles event, earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory over California's Bojana Bobusic on Thursday afternoon.
"Marrit played a little tentative in the first set and was better in the second," UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. "By the end of the match, she was playing much more aggressively, which is exactly how you need to play on indoor courts."
Boonstra will play the winner of the match between Northwestern's fourth-seeded Maria Mosolova and Nebraska's Wiveca Swarting on Friday afternoon in the round of 16.
Boonstra earned a spot in the 32-player singles field by reaching the final of the ITA South Regional Championship held two weeks ago.
Also in action on Friday includes UF freshmen Jo Mather (Duluth, Ga.) and Barbara Pinterova (Solvakia), who will begin play at the SEC Coaches Fall Classic held in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
