The fourth-ranked University of Florida women's tennis team won its ninth consecutive match with its 7-0 shutout of Mississippi State on Sunday afternoon at the Pitts Tennis Centre.
The Gators improved to 27-0 all-time against the Lady Bulldogs while stretching this season's overall record to 12-1, including 6-0 in Southeastern Conference matches.
Florida returns to Gainesville where the team next plays host on Friday to 22nd-ranked and SEC Western Division leader Arkansas (12-5, 5-1 SEC), which is coming off Sunday's stunning 4-3 victory over No. 6 Georgia.
Admission to Friday's match that begins at 5 p.m. at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis is FREE! Fans attending the match can park in the law school parking lot adjacent to the Tennis Complex after 4:30 p.m. Parking is still restricted, however, in the handicap and designated car pool spots.
In Sunday's victory, Florida was led by a pair of seniors, as Whitney Benik (Delray Beach, Fla.) won her 90th career singles match and Lolita Frangulyan (Bradenton, Fla.) tallied her 11th consecutive singles win. Both veterans also contributed towards the doubles point, which the Gators captured for the 13th time this season.
UF's trio of sophomores provided the first three singles victories of the afternoon. Megan Alexander (Dallas, Texas) was the first Gator off the court, posting a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Radka Ferancova at the No. 3 position. Anastasia Revzina (Russia) followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win against DeAndra Saddler on court No. 5, before Csilla Borsanyi (Hungary) polished off the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-2 decision versus Renee Joseph at the No. 2 spot.
Julia Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.), the lone freshman taking the court for the Gators on Sunday, provided the final victory of the day, downing Martina Banikova, 7-6 (5), 6-4, on the showcase court, as she improved to 11-1 in her young collegiate singles career. Cohen, who teamed with Revzina in doubles competition to earn the first win of the dual match, remained undefeated in 13 collegiate doubles matches after Sunday's 8-2 victory.
