Stockbarger Paces Collegians In Men's Discus At Mt. SAC Relays
Monday, April 21, 2008 | Track and Field
Senior Wes Stockbarger (Port Charlotte, Fla.) topped the collegiate field in the men's invitational discus at the Mt. SAC Relays on Sunday evening with a toss of 58.78m/192-10 to lead a group of University of Florida track & field athletes in the conclusion of a successful west-coast trip that saw them record numerous event wins and NCAA qualifying marks.
“What you saw this weekend was indicative of the attitude that we've seen from this team since the beginning of the season,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. “We have a lot of great athletes, and they have made a commitment to working hard and continuing to improve. They made a long trio this week, but they competed at a very high level and represented our team admirably against some top competition.”
Stockbarger's performance was a season best, and his best since the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships, placing him fourth overall and first among collegians. The mark ranks 11th in the NCAA this season, and third in the East Region.
Senior Natalie Knight (Snellville, Ga.) was the only college representative in the women's Olympic Development 200m, finishing second in a time of 23.35, while sophomore Shara Proctor (The Valley, Anguilla) was also the lone collegian in the women's invitational long jump, and finished 11th with a top mark of 6.03m/19-9.50. Junior Eugene Martin (Gainesville, Fla.) took fourth overall, and third among collegians, in the men's invitational high jump with a clearance of 2.05m/6-8.75.
The Gators will be back in action next weekend, as one part of the team will head north for the Penn Relays and another group will get a preview of the competition site for the NCAA Outdoor Championships when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Drake Relays. Live results will be available via www.GatorZone.com.
