Former Gator McGinnis Named to 19-Player Preliminary US Olympic Roster
Wednesday, June 25, 2008 | Volleyball
Former University of Florida All-American setter Angie McGinnis (Fraser, Mich.) has been named to the USA Volleyball 19-player preliminary roster, from which the 12-member squad will be selected to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games.
McGinnis looks to become the first former Florida player to be named to the U.S. Olympic Team in indoor volleyball when the 12-player roster is announced in mid-July with U.S. Olympic Committee confirmation to follow. She would become the second former Gator volleyball player to participate in the Olympic games, as Gudula Staub (1991-92) was a member of Germany's beach volleyball team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
McGinnis was a member of USA Volleyball's Tour of China in March of 2008, helping the United States to a 5-3 overall record against Chinese club teams. With McGinnis on the roster, Team USA posted a fifth-place finish in the Pan American Cup in Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico, in early June. She earned the Best Setter award at the 2008 Pan American Cup, averaging 4.38 assists per set.
McGinnis and Team USA participated in the first week of the FIVB World Grand Prix June 20-22 in Kobe, Japan and will compete in the second of four Grand Prix weekends June 27-29 in Wroclaw, Poland.
McGinnis capped one of the most impressive careers in Florida volleyball history in December, 2007. She became just the fourth player in school history to be named an American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American three times. McGinnis was a two-time Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, making her only the fifth player in conference history to be named SEC Player of the Year on multiple occasions.
McGinnis completed her collegiate career at Florida as the school's career leader in assists with 5,784 dishes. She set the single-season school record in assists per game with 13.88, which ranked sixth in the nation. McGinnis became the first player in school history to collect both 1,000 digs and 300 blocks in her career, as well as the first setter to reach either of those milestones.
McGinnis reached 4,000 assists faster than any player in school history and played in 449 career games, more than any other player in the rally-scoring era. She owns nearly 40 career, season and match records at UF.
