Florida Volleyball Freshman Named NCSAA Player of the Year

Incoming University of Florida volleyball freshman middle blocker Betsy Smith (Atlanta) has been named the National Christian School Athletic Association Large-School Division National Volleyball Player of the Year, the Beaver Falls, Pa., organization announced.
Smith, the nation's 26th-ranked recruit according to PrepVolleyball.com, who competed for Wesleyan School in Norcross, Ga., was Georgia's 2007 Gatorade Player of the Year. She graduated from Wesleyan as the school's career record holder in kills (1,478) and hitting percentage (.369), as well as the school's single-season kills leader (441). Smith helped her high school to four consecutive Class A/AA state championships as a four-year starter.
Smith, 6-foot-2, was named in All-American in 2007 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association and by Mizuno/Volleyball Magazine. In each of her last two seasons, she was named an All-American by PrepVolleyball.com, including a first-team Academic All-American by PrepVolleyball in 2007.
Smith served as the captain of the Junior National A2 squad at the 2007 European Global Challenge in Italy and Croatia. She played with that team at the 2006 High Performance Championships, earning the Best Blocker award.
