Spofforth Claims Fourth in 100 Back at 2008 Olympic Games

Gemma Spofforth (Great Britain) led the charge in representing the UF women in the final heat of the 100-meter backstroke in 2008 Olympic swimming action from Beijing's Water Cube Monday. Spofforth narrowly missed bronze medal position by four-hundredths-of-a-second, clocking a career-best 59.38 fourth-place finish. Spofforth was out-touched by bronze medalist Margaret Hoelzer of the U.S. (59.34), silver medalist Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe (59.19) and champion Natalie Coughlin, who represented the United States (58.96).
Incoming Gator men Rodion Davelaar (Curacao) and Roberto Gomez (Venezuela) and UF veteran Shaune Fraser (Cayman Islands) will all take to the water at 6:57 a.m. (EST) Tuesday in preliminaries of the 100-meter freestyle, while rising senior Bradley Ally (Barbados) competes in the men's 200-meter breaststroke at 7:48 a.m. (EST).
Gator alum Adam Sioui, who is representing Canada at the 2008 Games, will round out preliminary action for the Orange and Blue in the men's 4x200-meter free relay, beginning at approximately 8:00 a.m. (EST).
