Burckle Earns Silver Medal, Napier and Storie Earn Bronze as Gators Conclude 2008 U.S. Open

Clark Burckle (Louisville, Ky.), Stephanie Napier (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Logan Storie (Corvallis, Ore.) walked away from day five of the 2008 U.S. Open with medals, Burckle earning silver in the 200 IM, Napier claiming bronze in the 50 free and Storie earning bronze in the 800 free. The trio represented UF as the Gators wrapped up the final day of the 2008 Open from the Minnesota Aquatic Center Saturday.
Burckle kicked off the 200-meter IM for the Gators racing to a career-best time of 2:01.30, good for second place in the A final and his second silver medal of the 2008 U.S. Open, his first earned in the 400 IM. Rex Tullius (Port Orange, Fla.) swam a 2:07.19 for a 28th place 200 IM preliminary swim, while Alex Martin (Ponte Vedre Beach, Fla.) clocked in at 2:08.19, finishing 36th. Soon-to-be sophomore Bobby Walsh (Virginia Beach, Va.) rallied for 51st (2:10.12).
Continuing the career-best tradition Saturday, the UF women had representation in the 50-meter freestyle from Napier. Napier recorded a 25.56, second-place prelims finish and went on to swim a career best 25.34 finals race, good for third-place and a bronze medal.
Storie rallied for the Gators in the 800-meter free with a third place bronze medal performance in timed finals of the event, tapping in at 8:05.05, going under the U.S. Open Meet Record of 8:10.44.
Stephanie Proud (Durham, England) represented the Gator women in the 200 IM, swimming to a 36thplace preliminary finish with a time of 2:21.00, four-tenths-of-a-second faster than her best 2007-08 season mark of 2:21.40, set at UF?s dual meet against Auburn in January.
Leading the way in Saturday distance freestyle action for the women, Laurabeth Guenthner (Wellington, Fla.) recorded her fourth career-best time of the U.S. Open in the 1,500-meter free tapping in at 16:40.09, sixth place overall, while Madison Parker (Biloxi, Miss.) clocked in at 17:04.53, good for 17th place. Rising junior Kristen Beales (Arlington, Va.) wrapped up 1,500-meter freestyle action for the women with a 19th-place finish (17:07.72)
