In the first set, the Tigers and Broncos battled back and forth until Western Michigan took control, never looked back and went on to win 25- 14. Senior Ashley Vogl led the way for the Broncos with four kills. Junior setter Jillian Mitchell racked up 10 assists, while junior libero Caitlin Strimel recorded six digs. For the Tigers, Alexa Anderson totaled four kills, Shannon Krug dished five assists and Dancyne Kama had three digs the first time around.
Western Michigan continued the aggressive trend in the second set, jumping out to a 17-10 lead. The Broncos finished the set 25-16 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Junior outside hitter Michelle Moore had six kills for the Broncos, while Vogl returned with five kills in the second game. Mitchell tallied 10 assists and junior Katie Eberling racked seven digs for Western Michigan. Junior outside hitter Mallori Gibson had five kills, rallying for Pacific, while Krug added eight assists in attempts to keep the Tigers within reach. Kara Uhl and Kama had three digs each for the Tigers in the second set.
The Tigers fought hard for claim of the third set tying the Broncos at 21, but Western Michigan kept the match from going to a fourth set by pulling out the 25-22 win. Moore returned to lead the Broncos with five kills, while Mitchell added 10 more assists and Eberling contributed seven digs.
Western Michigan's Moore led all players in the showdown with 14 kills, while Vogl recorded the second-most, 10 kills. Mitchell tallied 30 total assists in the game, while Eberling totaled 15 digs. Strimel contributed 13 digs for the Broncos and Kama led the way in digs for the Tigers with 13. Gibson killed eight balls for Pacific and Krug led the Tigers with 16 assists in the match.
Both teams will return to action on Saturday to wrap up the Aquafina Invitational with Pacific taking on the Florida Gators at 4:00 p.m. The final match of the tournament kicks off at 6:00 p.m. when Western Michigan faces UAB.
