UF W-Tennis: First Day of Gator Fall Classic Complete
Friday, September 19, 2008 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida women's tennis team posted a combined 4-1 singles and doubles record on the first day of play at the 2008 Gator Fall Classic held at the Ring Tennis Complex.
UF returners Megan Alexander (Dallas, Texas), Marrit Boonstra (Netherlands) and Anastasia Revzina (Russia) each logged victories in their respective first singles matches of the 2008-09 season. The Gators' lone singles setback of the day was by freshman Jo Mather (Duluth, Ga.), who did pair with Revzina to net her first collegiate doubles win.
Action in the three-day event continues on Saturday, with first-serve for all singles matches scheduled for 8 a.m. Admission is free.
“Some of our players looked really good and others didn't have as good of a first day, but that's understandably so,” said UF head coach Roland Thornqvist, who enters his eighth year at the helm of the Gator program. “Playing this weekend is the foundation for the rest of our Fall season. I think we will play better as a team on Saturday now that we have the first-round jitters out of the way.”
Boonstra was the first Gator off the court, recording a 6-4, 6-4 victory over UCF's Jenny Frisell in the opening round of the Flight A Draw. The 67th-ranked Florida sophomore faces 55th-ranked Megan Broderick of Kentucky in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
“It was the first match of the year and I was a little bit nervous, but it was ok,” Boonstra said. “I've been playing really well in practice and I wanted to play like that out here today, but that didn't happen. There were a little nerves being back here for the first time in several months and competing.”
Alexander, ranked No. 70 in the ITA National Preseason listing, followed with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over UCF's Elvira Serrot and drew a quarterfinal match-up with top-seeded and 43rd-ranked Kelcy Tefft of Notre Dame.
“I thought today was great. I enjoy playing someone different than my teammates in practice,” Alexander said. “It was good competition to start a new season. I'm trying to throw in more serve-and-volleys and I'm working on being more aggressive, as well as not going for too much too soon. I'm working to be more consistent on the court right now.”
Revzina was in a battle throughout her first-round match, but emerged over South Florida's Jessica Zok with a 7-6 (7), 1-6, 1-0 (10-8) decision to advance. The 66th-ranked Gator plays Kentucky's 83rd-ranked Sarah Woestmann in Saturday's quarterfinal round.
“On the first day, you're always a little nervous, but I think it went ok for a first day,” Revzina shared. “Everyone played well. It wasn't necessarily the best tennis, but it was the first day. I'm really excited about doubles and my new partner, Jo Mather. I think we can have some good results. It was our first match, but we had fun and we were excited. It's great to have this tournament that gets us a few matches under our belt before we compete at the Riviera All-American.”
Mather showed signs of nerves throughout the course of her collegiate singles debut, but showed a spark and signs of things to come when she continued to battle in the second set before falling 6-0, 6-4 to Kentucky's Jennifer Stone in the Flight B Draw.
The Gator rookie opened Friday's play in doubles action, where she and Revzina topped UCF's Elvira Serrot and Andrea Yacaman, 8-3, in the first round.
